2000:  After a rash of thefts of DVDs from the Warren-Trumbull public library, all CDs have been placed in special cases that will set off an alarm if not deactivated by a librarian. 

Boardman's new police chief, Jeffrey Patterson, says the key to effective leadership is to incorporate others' ideas into the department. He succeeds Chief Glenn Bowers. 

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. fills in as the host on Dan Ryan's radio talk show. William E. Kelly Jr., vice president of Clear Channel Radio in Youngstown, says Traficant is a natural because he is fearless. 

 

1985: The high cost of living is a lot higher in New York, Los Angeles, or even Columbus, compared to Youngstown.  Chamber of Commerce researchers find Youngstown's cost of living is 5.4 percent lower than the national average for 242 American cities. 

Trumbull County Sheriff Richard Jakmas is questioning why the county commissioners' budget does not include 6 percent pay raises for the Sheriff's Department employees, as ordered by an arbiter. 

The body of a former Westminster College student was found in a Columbus motel room, an apparent suicide. David Wallentinowitz, 22,  of Cheektowaga, N.Y., was being sought for the murder of Sheila Curtin, 21, of Buffalo, and Jeri Marcinkowski, 21,  of Hamburg, N.Y. 

 

1975: William J. Blackman will be the beefeater, Dirk Gould the rider of the yule log, and Nancy Bannon the sprite when St. John's Episcopal Church holds its Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival. 

Nineteen of the 32 area students attending service academies attended the 22nd annual Christmas luncheon sponsored by the South Side Merchants and Civic Association.

1950: David L. Evans of Niles, vice president of the McKinley Federal Savings and Loan Association, is appointed director of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, succeeding  Harvey C. Kistler, who died in September. 

Two district plants, the Ravenna Arsenal and Mullins Manufacturing, are returning to wartime production schedules. Mullins received a $4 million contract for mortar shells. 

Temperatures drop to 4 degrees below zero at the Youngstown Municipal Airport, causing the East Ohio Gas Co. to curtail industrial usage by 50 percent.
