YOUNGSTOWN - A dog who lived at a Youngstown animal shelter for seven years was sent off in an official ceremony Saturday morning to celebrate his adoption.

The dog, named Onyx, was rescued from a situation of neglect in 2018 and taken to the Animal Charity of Ohio, a humane society on Southern Boulevard in Youngstown.

Jenny Falvey, president of the Board at the Animal Charity, says Onyx was adopted on Dec. 23 by a northeast Ohio resident who wished to remain anonymous.

"When they met him, it was an instant connection," she said.

Falvey claims the owners adopted Onyx after they saw him in a video with northeast Ohio social media influencer Joey Kinsley, also known as 'Sir Yacht,' who volunteers with the organization.

Kinsley, who attended Onyx's sendoff, says he broke down in tears when he learned Onyx was adopted.

"He means a lot to a lot of people here, and we're gonna miss him, but every dog deserves a chance," he said.

Onyx arrived at his new home at around 12:30 p.m..

The Animal Charity of Ohio is the only humane society in Mahoning County.

It rescues abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs.

Falvey says she hopes Onyx's story will inspire others to adopt a dog from a shelter.

"They need a little time to adjust to a compassionate and loving life, but if you give them a chance, they turn out to be the most amazing companions," she said.

Falvey adds that the organization is only funded through donations and relies on the community for help.
