World War II Veteran, Combat Medic from Niles dies at 103

NILES A World War II veteran from Niles died on Dec. 21 at the age of 103.
Joseph James Bonanno, a combat medic who served under the command of George S. Patton in World War II, was born on Feb. 16, 1922.
In 2022, at the age of 100, he received a Mayor's Proclamation during the Nile's Fourth of July Parade from Mayor Steven Kientkiewicz.
During the parade, 21 News spoke with Bonanno about the honor he was given.
"Any combat medic doesn't come back home on their own," Bonanno told 21 News. "Jesus brings them home. That's why I'm so happy. I love everybody. This is the greatest day of my life."
Bonanno was inducted at Fort Hayes in Columbus during his time in the war. He completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia and served in the European Theater of Operations with the U.S. Army's 3rd Army, 10th Armored Division, 20th Armored Medical Battalion, Company B, Medical Ambulance Platoon.
He was also awarded five Bronze Battle Stars for his service in working toward tending to wounded soldiers while under fire on the front lines.
In 2023, Bonanno was given the title of Grand Marshall of the Lake Milton, Ohio, Memorial Day parade. That honor was given to him by the American Legion Lake Post 737, a tribute reflecting "the deep respect held for him by the veterans' community and residents."
After becoming Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day parade in Lake Milton, Bonanno said that he was grateful for the blessings he received throughout his long life. He also stated how he continued to honor, admire and remember all of those who served and sacrificed for the United States of America.
Following his passing, Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion William McKinley Post 106 in Niles.
"On behalf of our family, we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and respect honoring our father," stated Joseph Bonanno Jr., his son. "He lived a life defined by service, humility and gratitude."
Calling hours will be held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Holloay-Williams Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Niles. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at St. Pope John XXII, St. Stephen Campus, followed by military honors and interment services at Pineview Memorial Park Chapel & Mausoleum in Warren.
