PennDOT restricts speeds on some roadways in Mercer, Lawrence Counties

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is expanding certain speed restrictions within Mercer County and Lawrence County due to weather conditions impacting the region on December 31, 2025.
According to a news release, the following roadways will have a speed restriction of 45 miles per hour:
- Interstate 80 from the Ohio state line to Exit 133 in Clearfield County
- Interstate 376 from the Interstate 80 interchange in Mercer County to Exit 5 in Lawrence County
- Interstate 79 from Exit 113 in Mercer County to the end point in Erie County
As of 7 p.m., PennDOT has expanded the speed restrictions to include sections of Interstate 79 in Lawrence County.
Now, speeds on the length of Interstate 79 from the end point in Erie County to Exit 48, also known as Southpointe and Hendersonville, have been reduced to 45 miles per hour.
Additionally, the speed restriction affecting Interstate 376 has been expanded to be between Exit 85, also known as U.S. 22, and Interstate 80.
It is noted that any commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roads must move into the right lane.
Although PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts and traffic speed information can be found on the 511PA website map.
