Thousands left without power due to car crash in New Castle

Thousands in New Castle, Pennsylvania, were without power as of Saturday, January 3, 2025, due to a car crash on the previous day.
As of 8:35 a.m. on Saturday, 2,286 customers were reported to be without power.
According to the New Castle Fire Department, a car crash at around 8 p.m. on Friday in the area of Atlantic Avenue brought down a telephone pole, which blew a transformer.
A subsequent power surge then blew several other transformers in other areas of New Castle.
The fire department confirmed that Penn Power, the supplier of electricity to the area, is aware of the issue and had been working to restore power throughout the night.
As of 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, most of the over 2,000 customers without power have seen their service restored. However, 279 outages remained.
Power to those customers was expected to be restored by 1 p.m. on Saturday. However, as of 4 p.m., 298 customers are still impacted by an outage. The new estimated time of restoration is 6 p.m.
According to a "crew status" notice on the FirstEnergy outage map, additional crews had been requested to assist in the area due to the complexity of the necessary repairs.
Additionally, the New Castle Firefighters Local 160 announced on its Facebook page that George Washington Intermediate School, located at 101 East Euclid Avenue, would be available as a warming center with oxygen available to those who need it.
