A jury trial is scheduled to begin Monday morning for a Wellsville man accused of shooting a teenager in 2024.

E’mory Nazay Chiles, 20, is facing several felony charges in the Columbiana County Common Pleas Court. The charges include attempted murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and inducing panic. The charges are related to an April 2024 incident where a juvenile was shot in the wrist on 18th Street in Wellsville.

Court documents show that Chiles plans to argue that he acted in self-defense. His lawyer, James Wise, filed a notice in September stating that the defense would present evidence regarding the conduct of the person who was shot.

At a hearing in December, lawyers reported they had not reached an agreement to resolve the case without a trial. Chiles has remained in custody on $500,000 bond.

Judge Scott Washam is overseeing the case.

In a separate matter, Chiles was also accused of having a weapon while he was being held at the Columbiana County Jail in July 2025.

The trial is set to start at 8:30 a.m.
