Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to cease publication May 3

PITTSBURGH - The owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Wednesday that the newspaper will cease publication Sunday, May 3.
Block Communications Inc. stated the company has lost more than $350 million in cash operating the newspaper over the past 20 years. Despite efforts to manage these costs, the ownership group said the economic environment facing local journalism makes continued losses at that scale unsustainable.
The Post-Gazette is the largest newspaper of record for the city and one of two dominant news organizations in the region. It currently operates primarily in a digital format, delivering print editions on Thursdays and Sundays.
The announcement leaves the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, known as TribLIVE, as the primary remaining major news outlet in the market. TribLIVE operates an all-digital edition for the city of Pittsburgh while continuing to print editions for surrounding suburbs and Westmoreland County.
