'Respite of Hope' care facility opens to patients in Mahoning Valley

A new medical respite care facility held a ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
The Respite of Hope facility is located at 550 West Chalmers Avenue in Youngstown and aims to offer short-term residential care to those who are medically stable but lack safe housing needed to recover.
The program will offer integrated case management and other support services that are designed to promote physical healing, housing stability and long-term wellbeing.
The facility was blessed by Bishop David Bonnar of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, with light refreshments and a tour following the blessing.
Bishop Bonnar told 21 News that this facility is important because it will help those in need feel seen and supported.
"We're not meant to be alone. We're human beings, and we are at our best when we're surrounded by people, when we work together, when we experience that sense of accompaniment, no matter what the situation might be," said Bishop Bonnar.
Respite of Hope is a project of Catholic Charities Regional Agency, developed with the help of:
- Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital
- Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley
- Meridian Health Care
- Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown
- Sisters of the Humility of Mary
- Several private donors
