Community center in Youngstown coming into shape
Over the last several months, community based ARP projects have been wrapping up across Youngstown with parks and green spaces across the city getting a facelift. Now an indoor community space is coming into shape.
"A portion of the day would be fore the seniors and they like to get up and be out of the house by 9:00, and be back in the house before dark," said councilwoman Anita Davis.
She tells 21 News the hope is also for the space to be a place for kids to get tutoring after school during the evening hours, and the location more than ideal.
"The busses are running constantly so there is access for the kids and the adults to get there," Davis explained.
This was all a part of the vision councilwoman Davis had when city council approved the purchase, and conversion of the old McDonald's building, to the tune of nearly $1 million dollars in ARP funding. Also a part of those plans, an office space for police officers.
"I'll have to sit down and talk with our new police chief if she still even wants to utilize the facility," councilwoman Davis explained.
It's unclear at this time the building will be staffed., or what the city's plan for maintenance will be. The city's deputy director of Public Works says they are only a few weeks away from completing the project.
"We did have some problems with the sanitary sewer under the slab was damaged and plugged so bad we had to dig it up," said Charles Shasho.
It was one of the few speed bumps slowed progress for a time. While the project is almost completed its unknown when the community center will be up and running.
