Village of Sebring warns of water bill printing error
SEBRING, Ohio - People who receive water in the Village of Sebring are being notified about an error that appeared on recent water bills, causing confusion over how much customers owe.
Village leaders said the issue involves the amounts printed on the bill. The number shown in the late fee section is lower than expected, while a higher amount appears as the total.
Village Manager, Timothy Gabrelcik explained to 21 News that a printing error caused the figures on the bill to be switched.
"From last year we reprinted bills, we reformatted them a little bit, put some more consumer information on the backs, and I think when we went to print them, we didn't catch that it flip flopped on that side of the bill," Gabrelcik said.
The lower amount is the correct balance due if the bill is paid on time. The higher amount reflects what the bill would be if payment is made after the due date.
Village officials said they moved quickly to spread the word, posting alerts on the Village Facebook page and explaining the issue in person to anyone who comes into the office to pay their bill.
More than 2,000 customers were effected by the mix-up, in addition to some people in surrounding communities and some businesses.
"We're still looking at it, making sure if the commercial accounts are affected the same way, but we're assuming they were, but we'll make that right," Gabrelcik said.
The village manager said they are making sure residents understand what they truly owe while the village works to prevent the mistake from happening again. If someone does pay late due to the confusion, Gabrelcik expressed they will work with them to prevent more late fees.
