According to a Monday news release, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has approved over $240 million for its 2026 capital budget.

The approved $246.8 million includes funding from four sources, including:

  • Systems Projects Fund, with a total of $213 million
  • Renewal and Replacement Fund, with a total of $17.9 million
  • Fuel Tax Fund, with a total of $13 million
  • Service Plaza Capital Improvement Fund, with a total of $2.9 million

A majority of the funding, totaling 94.8%, came primarily from Ohio Turnpike tolls, according to the release.

The funds are planned to support several projects, including pavement replacement, bridge rehabilitation, toll system upgrades and service plaza improvements.

"This capital plan reflects our responsibility to the millions of travelers and commercial drivers who rely on the Ohio Turnpike every year," said Executive Director Ferzan Ahmed, P.E.

Ahmed continued," It's a forward-looking investment in safety, mobility and economic growth across Ohio."

The Commission allocated $230.5 million of the funding towards a preliminary list of capital improvements, while $16.3 million will be kept as uncommitted funds for any potential needs later in the year.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, a 2026 project was announced in the release.

The Commission will launch an Intelligent Transportation System and an Advanced Traffic Management System, which are expected to be completed in 2027.

The project includes:

  • Dynamic message signs
  • Variable speed limits
  • Video monitoring
  • A roadway weather information system, which would use sensors and cameras to provide real-time data on roadway conditions

"We're committed to investing in the long-term safety, reliability and efficiency of the Ohio Turnpike for everyone who travels it," said Chief Engineer Chris Matta, P.E.

Matta went on to say that the 2026 capital budget would allow the Commission to deliver on the standards of the Ohio Turnpike travelers.
