Warren woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty

A Warren woman admitted Wednesday to a charge of animal cruelty involving a dog found in poor health last year.
Stephanie Swegan, 54, pleaded guilty to a first-degree misdemeanor of cruelty to companion animals. The plea took place before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean O’Brien.
The charge followed an investigation at a home on Oak Knoll Avenue SE in May 2025. Authorities said they found a dog, later named Baby, in a basement. The dog was emaciated and had a ruptured mass on its abdomen.
The home was in poor condition when the dog was discovered. Due to the health of the animal, veterinarians had to euthanize it.
Swegan will undergo a background investigation by probation officers before the judge schedules a sentencing date.
Another resident of the home, 44-year-old Thomas Leimkuehler, pleaded guilty to a similar charge last week. He could face up to 180 days in jail.
The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project assisted with the case after the dog was first discovered. The organization works to provide care for animals in medical distress.
