Erie man dead following multi-vehicle crash in Mercer County
JACKSON TOWNSHIP, MERCER COUNTY, Pennylvania - Mercer County Coroner John Libonati was called to a multi-vehicle crash on I-79 in Mercer County on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's 511PA website, the crash happened on I-79 northbound just over one mile north of exit 122 in Jackson Township.
According to a release by Pennsylvania State Police, three semi-trucks were involved in the crash. One semi-truck was stopped in the right lane due to traffic and was struck by a semi-truck travelling behind it. Then a third semi-truck hit the second semi, which was resting in the left lane after crashing into the first trailer.
The first and second semi-trailers were moderately damaged in the crash, however, the third trailer had major damage to the front end and driver side. The driver of the third trailer was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to a release by Mercer County Coroner John Libonati, the deceased driver has been identified as 22-year-old Austin Golab of Erie, Pennsylvania. It states Golab's cause of death was from blunt force trauma to the head and chest. The release adds that the death has been ruled accidental.
One passenger from the second semi was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The crash closed roadways going in both directions between the I-80 interchange and Exit 130 for a number of hours. PSP says the roadways have since reopened.
Pennsylvania State Police is investigating what caused the crash.
