Youngstown woman claims city caused $17k in water damages to home
A Youngstown woman claims a water line broke near her home on Meridian Road, causing $17,000 worth of damage to her property back in June.
"The water was there for maybe two hours and all that just came inside all around the property," Chantal Jones of Youngstown said.
The foundation of her home and basement was damaged by the flood, she claims.
"We did a claim, after that we talked to our insurance company and the Youngstown water department was found responsible for the loss," Jones said.
However, when she took the report from her insurance to the city, the city denied to pay.
In a letter dated January 5th, the city said, "Pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code and as in this particular instance, the City is 'immune from liability...unless the conduct was exercised with malicious purpose, in bad faith, or in a wanton or reckless manner. In the instant matter, there was insufficient evidence to establish liability."
Jones claims this isn't the first time the water line needed repairs.
"It was the fourth time that main line broke over several years. It's a problem they tried to patch for a while," she said.
Jones just wants the city to take accountability.
"It's sad, it just seems like a little bit ridiculous that today people don't just stand up for what it is. It doesn't make him a bad person, it broke, it broke, that's it. I mean, you're responsible. Stand up," she said.
Jones has reached out to Mayor Derrick McDowell in hopes of getting the situation taken care of.
21 News also reached out to McDowell and the city water department and did not hear back.
