PennDOT reminding drivers to be on the lookout for snow squalls

Drivers in Pennsylvania are encouraged to be on the lookout for wintry weather with the potential for snow squalls.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued the reminder in a news release on Friday.
Drivers are reminded to slow down, pay attention and use caution in less-than-ideal travelling weather where visibility may be limited.
A snow squall is defined as a brief period of heavy snow, strong winds and whiteout conditions. Heavy snow would look like up to two inches of snow in 30 minutes, plus winds of over 30 miles per hour.
Whiteout conditions would be when visibility is less than a quarter of a mile.
Tips for how drivers can stay safe when driving in these unpredictable conditions are shared as follows:
- Slow down and gradually drive at a speed that suits conditions
- Turn on your headlights, or hazard lights if caught in a squall
- Stay in your lane and increase follow distance
- Stay alert and look ahead as far as possible
- Use your defroster and wipers
- Keep windows and mirrors free of ice and snow
- During whiteouts, only pull off to the side of the road and stop when safe
- Do not stop in the flow of traffic
Updated roadway conditions in Pennsylvania can be found on the 511PA website using an interactive and color-coded map.
Western parts of the state are expected to see some light snow showers throughout Friday afternoon.
