Mahoning Valley organizations on alert as temperatures plunge
Mahoning Valley -
Organizations across the Valley are preparing for what could be a dangerous stretch of bitterly cold weather, with overnight temperatures expected to drop into the single digits and below zero.
For members of the LGBTQ community, Full Spectrum Community Outreach is stepping up to make sure no one goes without basic necessities. The organization is distributing coats, gloves and hand warmers to help people stay safe during the frigid nights ahead.
"We have drop in hours on Monday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. so come and enjoy our heat. We have like, hygiene services for the LGBT community," Full Spectrum Community Outreach organizer, Katie Coriston said.
The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley said it is currently at capacity, but continues to offer overnight emergency shelter for individuals and families.
Staff members say if someone needs to stay longer than the mission can accommodate, they will connect them with other organizations that provide extended shelter services. The mission's phone lines remain open 24 hours a day for anyone needing help.
"We open up our cafeteria, allow people to come in, hang out in the cafeteria, get warm coffee, charge a cell phone," Dominic Mararri, Director of Public Relations for the Warren Family Mission said.
