The Genova brand of yellowfin tuna products has added new quantities of product under a previous recall alert from February 2025.

The original, voluntary recall was issued on February 7, 2025, and included yellowfin tuna in the "easy open" pull tab cans on limited products. These lids had a manufacturing defect that could compromise the integrity of the product seal.

Thus, the faulty lid could have allowed the product to leak or be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

The recall notification, issued on January 19, 2026, was made by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Tri-Union Seafoods, the company that sells the yellowfin tuna products, after discovering that quarantined cases associated with the initial recall were accidentally shipped by a third-party distributor.

Those impacted products were distributed to stores throughout the country, including in Ohio.

Stores include:

  • Meijer stores located in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin
  • Giant Foods stores in Maryland and Virginia
  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in California

Recalled products can be identified using the specific can codes, Best if Used By dates and the Universal Product Code (UPC) found printed on the bottom of each can.

Products recalled include:

  • Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 ounce four-pack, with a UPC of 4800073265
    • Can code S84N D2L with a Best if Used By date of 01/21/2028
    • Can code S84N D3L with a Best if Used By date of 01/24/2028
  • Genova Yellowfin Tun in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5.0 ounces, with a UPC of 4800013275
    • Can code of either S88N or D1M with a Best if Used By date of 01/17/2028

Consumers with a recalled product are encouraged not to use the product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Furthermore, anyone feeling unwell is encouraged to seek medical attention.

Anyone with a recalled product can either return it to the store for a full refund, throw it away or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly at its support email or 833-374-0171 for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.

To request a retrieval kit or ask questions, the toll-free number is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
