The Shenango Valley Urban League held its annual "Day of Remembrance" event on Monday, January 19, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The event featured a breakfast, a guest speech by Reverend Michael Marshall, Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Farrell, Pennsylvania and a spotlight on minority entrepreneur Jessica Talbert-Kirsch, Founder and CEO of Mak of All Trades.

"The MLK Day observance is a reminder of the struggles of the past, but gives us hope for the future," said Dr. Erin Houston, President and CEO of the Shenango Valley Urban League.

In addition to the guest speaker and minority entrepreneur spotlight, students were also in attendance to share how the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had impacted their own lives.

"It's important to know how they view Dr. King and how they view the civil rights movement today in comparison to life in the civil rights movemnt, so that they know, even through they've come a long way, there'es still a lot of work to be done and they can participate in the work that still needs to be done," said Dr. Houston.

It is noted in a news release outlining the breakfast event that the Shenango Valley Urban League intends to host the annual Black History Essay Contest for fifth and sixth-graders in Mercer County.

The winners of that contest will be announced in March, and a special luncheon will feature a reading of the winning essays.
