Bond set at $50,000 for Warren man accused of punching dog

A judge in Warren Municipal Court set bond at $50,000 for a 48-year-old Warren man arraigned on Wednesday morning after police arrested him for allegedly punching and abandoning a dog at a local gas station.
Jody Elliott was booked into the Trumbull County Jail on Tuesday after an arrest warrant was issued. He pleaded "not guilty" during his video arraignment.
The charges against Elliott include a felony count of prohibitions concerning companion animals and a misdemeanor count of abandoning animals. The charges stem from Friday’s incident at a Sunoco gas station on West Market Street. Surveillance video reportedly showed a man striking a dog inside a vehicle before leaving the animal behind.
The dog was rescued by the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project. Jason Cooke, the organization's president, stated that the dog was malnourished but is expected to recover. Court records also show a notice of seizure was filed to officially remove the animal from Elliott's care.
If Elliot does make bond, the judge also ordered that he have no contact with animals.
In addition to the animal-related charges, Elliott faces unrelated traffic charges from earlier in the month, including driving with a suspended license.
