Youngstown teacher scheduled for plea in theft case

A long-time Youngstown City School District science teacher accused of taking school money is expected to appear in court Thursday to enter a plea.
Traci Tiggs, also known as Traci Cain, is scheduled for a hearing at 11:30 a.m. before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony Donofrio. Tiggs faces one felony count of theft.
The appearance follows a December pretrial hearing where the state made an offer to Tiggs. At that time, defense attorney Ronald Yarwood requested more time to review the amount of restitution, or the money to be repaid, before moving forward with a plea.
The court previously asked the Community Corrections Association to screen Tiggs for a theft diversion program. This program generally allows certain individuals to complete specific requirements to avoid a formal criminal conviction.
Tiggs is a veteran educator at East High School with over 20 years of experience. Records show she has held a professional teaching license since at least 2001 and is certified to teach chemistry, physics, and biological sciences. During the 2024-2025 school year, she was assigned to teach physical science, environmental science, and chemistry.
The charge stems from allegations of missing funds at East High School. An investigation began in 2023 after reports surfaced of missing money intended for a senior class trip to Florida. While Tiggs was initially placed on leave, she was later allowed to return to the classroom on condition that she no longer handles student money.
Court records indicate the alleged theft occurred between July 2017 and March 2025
