ODOT safety warning ahead of weekend winter storm

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is advising drivers to limit travel during the upcoming weekend as winter weather approaches.
Crews will be out on the roads ahead of, during and after the storm hits the state, ODOT said in a Thursday statement. They added that crews are already working to pre-treat roads and load trucks with de-icing materials in preparation.
If you must travel over the weekend, ODOT advises checking your route on OHGO for any potential delays.
Low temperatures in the coming days may make snow removal more difficult for road crews, as salt begins to be less effect once temperatures drop below 20 degrees, ODOT said. Additives will be used to activate the salt at low temperatures but drivers are advised that roadways will take longer to clear.
"Our snowplow drivers will be working long hours to keep the roads safe and passable, please do your part by driving for the conditions, putting your phone down, and giving crews room to work," ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn said in the statement.
The department also reminded drivers to slow down and keep a safe distance between themselves and vehicles ahead of them, including snow plows. ODOT also advised drivers to check that they have a winter safety kit stocked in their vehicle ahead of the weekend storm. Kits could include, "an ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, warning devices, blankets, cell phone charger, first aid kit, water and food."
Lastly, ODOT suggests checking your car's battery-life, tire tread and windshield washer reservoir.
If your vehicle does break down or crash, ODOT says turn on hazard lights and move the vehicle as far off the road as possible, stay inside the car and call #677 or 911 for assistance. If the vehicle is stuck in the snow, clear the tailpipe of any debris to reduce the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.
