Diocese: No obligation to attend Sunday Mass due to weather

In a statement, Bishop David J. Bonnar addressed questions the diocese has been receiving regarding expected winter weather and attending Sunday Mass.
Bishop Bonnar says the church does not require parishioners to travel in poor, possibly dangerous weather conditions and are not obliged to attend Holy Mass.
"There is no obligation to attend Holy Mass if weather or road conditions are unsafe or make travel dangerous or difficult, placing one's own life and the lives of others at risk, including those working to clear roadways for safe travel," said Bishop Bonnar.
He adds how some priests for the church travel from various counties every week; therefore, due to the weather, it may be unsafe for them to travel to Mass.
"Despite the inclement weather, Sunday still remains the Lord's Day. If you are unable to attend Holy Mass, you are encouraged to take some time in prayer for the Lord," said Bishop Bonnar in the statement.
