Mahoning County commissioner touts new site for county offices

YOUNGSTOWN - The old Eastern Gateway Community College building is set to be torn down to make room for a new building.
The majority of county offices located inside of the Oak Hill building on Oak Hill Avenue will likely have a new home there. Mahoning County Commissioner Geno DiFabio said it is time for a new chapter.
"We have to get out of Oak Hill. Oak Hill costs us a lot of money. We can't continue to put money into that place," DiFabio said.
The commissioners have yet to decide which offices will move to the new building, but the goal is to move all of the offices out of the Oak Hill location.
"We're going to have new facility in downtown Youngstown. It's going to incorporate many, many offices for the county. It's going to have a parking deck. It's going to be county parking during the day, and it could be used at night," DiFabio said.
The board of elections office has been looking for a new place, but they have some concerns about moving into another multi-office building. However DiFabio said this new building will satisfy the BOE's request to move.
DiFabio believes the location for the newly planned government center in downtown Youngstown is a perfect spot to encourage economic development.
"We have an opportunity now. We'll have a complete city block. We'll have a blank piece of paper, and the best part is, we'll be across the street, literally from the economic engine of Mahoning County," DiFabio said. "The port authority...Lake to River, they'll all be there. Anybody that comes in, anybody that wants to come in and talk about the development, [they can] say , 'I'll take you across the street, I'll introduce you to the commissioners' and it'll be a simple walk."
