The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to stay home as a major winter storm brings heavy snow and dangerous cold to the region.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the county until 10 a.m. Monday. Forecasters expect an additional 5 to 7 inches of snow to fall through Monday morning, bringing total accumulations to between 10 and 15 inches. Snow is falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour, which has created slippery roads and poor visibility.

Sheriff’s officials said residents should avoid any travel that is not an emergency. Because of the weather, all Mahoning County government offices and courts will be closed on Monday. Officials said the closures are meant to keep employees and the public safe.

Conditions are expected to worsen Monday night as an extreme cold watch begins. Wind chill values could drop between 15 degrees below zero and 24 degrees below zero through Tuesday morning. Health officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 30 minutes at these temperatures.

Residents who must go outside should wear multiple layers of clothing. Authorities also advise people to keep pets indoors and check on neighbors or family members who may need help during the storm.

Snow is expected to decrease late tonight and into Monday morning, but the extreme cold will likely last through much of the week.
