The ingredients are coming together for our coldest air of the year.

It’s been a brutal stretch for warm-weather lovers, as the past four days’ high temperatures have been around or even greater than 20 degrees below average. This will only continue until the end of the weekend.

Wind chills will stay below zero throughout the entire day on Wednesday, as steady winds will filter in from the southwest. Thermometers will struggle to get into the teens. Some flurries are possible overnight, however, as a disturbance from the north will try to rile up some lake-enhanced snow showers. The lake is mainly frozen, so that any snow showers will be weak.

We’ll wake up on Thursday dry, but still very, very cold. Temperatures will hover right around zero, though slightly diminished winds will allow wind chills to rise slightly to around 10 below. As winds shift, some more flurries are possible in the North. Accumulations on both days are favored for those north of I-80 and won’t be more than an inch.

Overnight, winds will calm, and clouds will open up. This is the perfect ingredient for temperatures to nosedive, along with the fresh snowpack. Our forecasted low temperature is right around -10.

While bitterly cold, winds will ease, making the morning feel exactly as the temperature reads, contrary to the last two mornings. Another cold day is expected under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs will get just above 10.

While folks on the East Coast may be dealing with a potent Nor’Easter, our area will stay dry and bitter. A similar high in the low tens is expected, and low temperatures could again get down below zero.

As both Tuesday and Wednesday morning have had low temperatures below zero, a nearly 70-year-old record could be broken. Below-zero lows are expected on Friday and Saturday mornings, with lows also possible on Thursday and Sunday mornings. Our longest sub-zero temperature streak is five days. If this verifies, we would have a stunning six-day streak.

We’ll take baby steps back to average as the seven-day forecast comes to a close. Highs on Sunday will be in the mid-to-upper teens, with another dry day on tap. By the start of the week, we’ll have high temperatures in the 20s. Alongside these ramping temperatures, we could have a chance for some clipper snow as the week begins.
