Familiar face in Valley politics plans campaign for Ohio House

YOUNGSTOWN - A familiar face in Mahoning Valley politics is planning to run for Ohio's 58th District this year.
John Boccieri, who previously served as a Democratic representative for Ohio's 59th District, is now looking to return to the Ohio House and represent Ohio's 58th District.
The 58th District is currently served by fellow Democrat Lauren McNally.
Boccieri tells 21 News he was inspired to return to his role as a State Representative after seeing the events that unfolded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in which federal immigration officers shot and killed U.S. citizens Renee Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti on January 24.
"I believe that is not who we are. We are better than this. At this point in our history, we need strong and steady leadership to get us through this chaos," Boccieri said.
When it comes to local issues, Boccieri says people in the Valley and beyond are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of living, unable to afford things like homes, cars and education.
Additionally, Boccieri says he wants to make sure cities like Youngstown are a major focus of initiatives in Columbus, and says Ohio needs a statewide strategy to improve and invest in Mahoning Valley communities, so economic opportunities are available for future generations.
Boccieri has not officially filed for candidacy yet, but is currently collecting signatures to do so. 50 valid signatures are required for Boccieri to qualify for the ballot. Boccieri says he is "well over" that requirement.
Boccieri tells 21 News he plans to file for candidacy next week.
In addition to serving Ohio's 59th District, Boccieri ran for the Ohio Senate in 2018, but lost to former State Senator and current 6th District Congressman Mike Rulli.
