Deep snow, freezing temps pose challenge at Brookfield house fire
One person is in the hospital following a house fire on Wednesday morning in the 700 block of Brookfield Avenue in Brookfield.
Brookfield Fire and EMS arrived around 10:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the front door. They spotted a man on the porch and moved him to an ambulance. Rescuers then took the man to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. His current condition has not been released.
Firefighters worked for nearly an hour to control the flames, which spread from the first floor to the third floor. Several nearby agencies assisted Brookfield crews, including the Sharon City, Eagle Joint, Vienna, Liberty, and Howland fire departments.
The department reported that deep snow and freezing temperatures made the work more difficult. Firefighters had to shovel out a nearby fire hydrant before they could get water to the house. No firefighters or other residents were injured, but the building suffered significant damage.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Officials said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
Fire officials are asking residents to clear a 3-foot path around fire hydrants near their homes to ensure quick access during winter emergencies.
