Parent teacher organization at Joshua Dixon filled dozens of bags of food for students at home
As students at Joshua Dixon Elementary remain home from school, the parent teacher organization wasn't sure they were still being fed.
"We are worried that these kids that get their lunch and their breakfast here aren't getting the meals at home," Emily Prine, vice president of the group said. "So many of our students rely on the food that they get from school, so the free lunch, the free breakfast, we just start trying to fill that gap in between," she said.
It took a group effort, but dozens of bags were filled with foods like fruit snacks, pasta, ramen, fruit juice and more for families to drive up and take home with them from the location of the school.
"We filled them with all of the things that your kids are probably eating you out of house and home with. We reached out to our community and the donations just started coming in," Prine said. "We raised over $700 in what, like eight hours," she said.
The group wanted to make sure it'd be enough to get students and their families through the rest of the week.
"I know it's gonna be colder on Friday so I can't imagine that we're not going to be closed on Friday, but we'll have to wait and see what they call. Regardless though, our kids are going to be fed," Prine said.
Prine and the PTO encourages other schools to hop on board and fill in the gaps for their own kid's needs between home and school.
Not every food bag was picked up, so some still remain at the drop-off entrance of Joshua Dixon Elementary for anyone to drive up and grab one.
