2001: In his 14 th year of eligibility, Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann is elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Swann, a member of four Super Bowl-winning teams, is the 11 th member of the Steelers dynasty to be elected to the Hall.

Mary DeGenaro is sworn in by Judge Scott Krichbaum as a new judge on Ohio's Seventh District Court of Appeals, which covers eight counties, including Mahoning and Columbiana. 

Five Trumbull County law enforcement officers are literally Ministers of Justice, as both law enforcers and church ministers. They are Sheila Cullins, Darryl Rogers, Vince Peterson, Tim Brown, and Terrence Eddington. 

 

1986: The space shuttle Challenger, with a crew of seven, including the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe, explodes shortly after takeoff from Cape Canaveral. All are presumed lost. Students at McAuliffe's New Hampshire high school who cheered the blastoff sat in stunned silence after the explosion.

John Gay Sr., 54, of Salem, is one of four ticket holders who will share in an $8 million Ohio Lotto jackpot. He will receive about $100,000 a year for 20 years. He said he is glad he was not the only winner, because "No one deserves $8 million." He and his wife never spend more than $2 a week on tickets. 

Three inches of additional snow and high winds that produced wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero cause ODOT to issue travel advisories. 

 

1976: An attendant at the Martin Oil Co, 100 McCartney Road, is wounded in a midmorning robbery. A second attendant was abducted by the robbers but released unharmed.

Youngstown postal employees stand outside the Post Office at the base of the Market Street Bridge as the funeral cortege of former Postmaster Chet Bailey passes by. Bailey, 69, died of a heart attack a month after retiring. 

Cleveland Indians Manager Frank Robinson leads a contingent of Indians at the Youngstown Curbstone Coaches luncheon. The Indians' slogan for the Bicentennial year is "Catch the Spirit."

 

1951: The Youngstown YMCA has become the scene of tournament table tennis matches. Dom Sandine recently won the Nelson Walker Tournament; Gordon Bugby was runner-up.

"Clean up the liquor situation in Youngstown and the county in 30 days, or I'll start to use the hatchet and sledgehammer myself," Mahoning County Sheriff Paul Langley tells Joseph Bednar, district liquor enforcement chief. Langley was obviously angered by a raid conducted by state agents without his knowledge. 

Carl Gangloff, secretary of the Greater Youngstown Area Foundation, says the foundation has received calls in the past two weeks from 15 major national concerns interested in establishing factories in the area.
