A record-breaking day, plus more historically cold weather likely ahead
January 30, 2026, officially has a spot in the record books.
As of 7 a.m. Friday, the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport recorded a low temperature of -8°F, tying a daily low temperature record set in 1965. In the next 24 hours, we could set another record.
If there was one positive shard from this bitter chill, the winds have calmed significantly. This is making the morning feel exactly as the temperature reads, contrary to the last two mornings. Another cold day is expected under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs will get just above 10. With winds staying calm and
While folks on the East Coast may be dealing with a potent Nor’Easter, our area will stay dry and bitter. A similar high in the low tens is expected on Saturday, and low temperatures will again get down below zero. For now, we are forecasting the low to dip down to -10°F, which would set another record, breaking one that dates back to 1948.
While not as cold overnight, the weekend days will continue the bitter trend across our area. Temperatures will likely struggle into the teens on Saturday, with lows bottoming out around zero. An arctic mass of high pressure will hold firm on Sunday, so while temperatures will improve a bit, highs will still be between 15-20°F below average.
From there, we could see a slight relief from the record-breaking temperatures. Monday’s highs will be in the mid-20s, though the chance exists for a flake or two overnight as a clipper system will move to our north.
Highs will again be in the mid-20s on Tuesday, featuring a mix of sun and clouds.
A low-pressure system looks likely to brew up from the south on Wednesday. This will feature the chance for rain, snow, and even a wintry mix across the mid-south. For now, weather modeling is disagreeing on the track, although for now, we are expecting this system to either just miss us or barely clip us. We’ll still need some time to iron out the details.
Another active period looks likely once the seven-day forecast comes to an end. We could see some more snow as we tread towards next weekend.
