The ‘Sip Taproom to close its doors
A restaurant relatively new to the scene in the village of Lisbon will be closing its doors Saturday, January 31.
Madison Beech and her husband moved to the area from Mississippi with the goal of bringing southern hospitality to the Columbiana County community. She says a tough economic climate, and other external factors led them to the decision to close.
"It came to the point of where if we keep pushing we will go bankrupt, and this place will close anyway," said Beech.
The business owner says feedback from the community included financial strain that kept them at home rather than going out, along with high prices, something Beech says weren't high but rather common.
"They're not McDonald's prices, but no restaurant that you go and sit down at, and it's scratch food isn't going to be McDonald's prices," Beech explained.
Beech wanted to give staff ample time to find jobs elsewhere before shuttering the business.
This news on the heels of village leaders prioritizing economic development over the years, a big component of those efforts, mayor Peter Wilson.
"I think the economy is still strong but it is still struggling a bit in this area, but I realize in this environment, many new restaurants don't survive. It usually takes a restaurant 3, 4, 5 years to establish a fixed clientele and become profitable," Wilson said.
The village leader says he was a big fan of the restaurant, complimenting the food and drinks. He also emphasized the success a business a village of less than 3,000 people, has to have outside of it.
"I wish businesses weren't closing in Lisbon by the same token we have businesses opening so it's part of the cycle," Wilson added.
