In Stark County, nearly 100 volunteers met on Friday, January 30, 2026, to help students from the Alliance City School District.

A call was put out on the Alliance City School District Facebook page on Thursday, asking anyone who could to meet at the Alliance High School cafeteria at noon on Friday.

Volunteers from the fire department, public library, school staff and other parts of the community all worked together to ensure that bus stops and sidewalks were clear of snow for students heading back to school in the next week.

Superintendent of Alliance City School District, Rob Gress, told 21 News that the idea stemmed from one of the middle school principals, worried that students would be waiting in unsafe conditions.

"We're worried about our kids being safe [on] Monday morning when we start going back [to school] and it'd still be dark," said Gress.

Crews worked in groups for about an hour, aiming to make a difference in their students' commutes.

After work was done, volunteers met back at the cafeteria for a pizza party and a chance to warm up.

"We want school to be a place where they know they're loved," said Gress.
