7th annual 'Men Who Cook' raises money for local boy scout troop
Anyone looking for good food, good time, or a cause to rally to behind packed into the Howland Community Church along Route 46 in Howland.
Leaders with Boy Scout Troop 28 invited the community to bring an appetite for the 7th annual Men Who Cook event, where folks can try delicious meals from about a dozen celebrity chefs, before voting on their favorite.
"We get celebrity chefs from the community. We have the sheriff here from Trumbull County, we have school teachers, we have principals that they do cooking for us," said Ruth Reble, scoutmaster for the local troop.
Boy scout troop 28 has been an asset to the Howland area. The yearly cook off is its biggest fundraiser which helps cover the cost of summer camp. The skills these young men learn paid dividends Sunday night, with more than 300 people in attendance.
"We get all the scouts involved. We try to teach them skills on how to help people, especially the cooks since they are offering their time," said Derek Hartz, community chair for scout troop 28.
Jack Finch who has won the annual cook off the last three years, is a former boy scout himself. He tells me the lessons he learned from mentors early on helped shape who he is today.
"They would teach us how to cook breakfast using tin cans and stuff, and these guys are getting back into more traditional ways of scholaring," said Finch.
Mark Taylor is a teacher at TCTC and says the boy scouts he has in class are setting a good example.
"If you do good things it might not come back right away but sooner or later it will. Good things come back to people who do good things," said Taylor.
Event organizers say they hope to raise between $3,000-$8,000.
