Cortland Mayor Petrosky recalled in special election

CORTLAND, Ohio - Voters in Cortland cast ballots Tuesday in a special election, ultimately deciding to recall Mayor Deidre Petrosky.
In a 75 to 24 split, just over 75 percent of voters in Cortland chose to recall Petrosky. A total of 1,231 ballots, across six precincts, were collected.
The recall was triggered after enough valid signatures were submitted under the city's charter—a process that Board of Elections Director Stephanie Penrose said is rare. Charter communities operate differently from most cities in Ohio, Penrose added.
"They are allowed to recall someone. A regular government can't do that," Penrose said. "Only a charter government in Ohio."
The effort stems from accusations that Petrosky bullied city employees, misused city funds and her overall management of the city. Petrosky denies the allegations, stating before the recall vote that it is "an honor to serve" and that she hopes to finish out city projects.
Penrose also added that the special election will cost the city roughly $1,000 to $1,200 per precinct.
Cortland City Council will now have to vote on who will take over as Mayor.
