Wellsville's Brianna Martin rises above cerebral palsy
Brianna Martin is a junior at Wellsville High School who battles cerebral palsy. It's a condition that affects body movement and balance.
Despite the health challenges she faces, Martin's doctor gave her the OK to join the high school girls basketball team this year.
"I never thought I would be able to do anything like this," said Martin. "I never thought I would one day come out on a basketball court."
Martin brings an uplifting and joyful spirit to every practice and game, and she refuses to let her limitations hold her back.
"Sometimes I get really groggy and tired, but mostly I don't let that stop me because I know it's just one part of me and I don't believe in weaknesses," said Martin.
Head coach Jaimon Edison praised her for showing up early and always working hard.
"From the day we met her, it was actually introducing our Lady Tigers for our winter event and she walked up to me and said 'Hey, Coach, I'm on the basketball team now' and so from that day forward we just embraced her and we love her energy and everything she's provided," said Edison.
Not only have her teammates embraced her, but the entire Wellsville community and opposing teams. Martin checks into every game and puts points on the board with everyone in the gym cheering her on.
"I feel like excited because I know as soon as I'm out there, there's a million people watching but I know they're all cheering for me, even if it's the opposite team, I know no matter what they're giving me the ball," said Martin.
Martin went from never playing a sport, to in many ways, being known as the heart of the team. She enjoys the opportunity so much that she plans to come back and be a part of the team during her senior year.
"I just say, fear can't stop you from what you truly believe in," said Martin.
