Over 200 Mahoning mathletes compete in Challenge Math 24
MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - Over 200 student mathletes from schools across Mahoning County met in Lowellville on Thursday to participate in the "Challenge Math 24" competition.
Students were challenged to add, divide and multiple four numbers in a variety of ways to come up with the number 24.
Campbell Elementary and Middle School hosted the competition and Principal Lisa Young said the event is always indicative of students' growth in the mathematics arena.
"I am so proud of our students," Young said. "It is so amazing to see them grow each year. To see our kids grow in their math skills is unbelievable. They're so fast — they beat me everytime I try to play."
The main sponsor and supporter of the event was the Michael "Mickey" Soroka Foundation. The foundation has helped keep the "Challenge Math 24" tradition alive in memory of Mickey Soroka, a former Campbell Schools teacher.
"I think the best way to say it is, Mickey was a coach and a math teacher. And, this challenge 24 competition is probably right up his alley. You can see that it would be something that he'd be excited to do or excited to be a part of," Eric Gonzalez, a member of the foundation said.
Schools participating in the event included: Campbell Elementary and Middle School; Northeast Ohio Impact Academy; Western Reserve; West Branch; Canfield Schools; Lowellville; Boardman Center Intermediate School; Poland Middle School; Brookfield Schools; St. Charles School; South Range.
Students who placed in the top 16 were awarded medals, while the top four earned a trophy.
