Grocery stores push through vendor delays during valley storms
Mahoning Valley - When winter weather hits most people rush to the grocery store to stock up and hunker down but those stores could also be dealing with challenges from mother nature. At Sparkle Market in Columbiana this past major snow storm delayed some vendor trucks by a few hours but deliveries did eventually make it to the store.
“Typically they're coming from Cleveland area so they're catching a heavy amount of lake effect snow so it's going to slow them down by several hours,” Brandon Hacker, the store manager of the Columbiana Sparkle Market said.
Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in Austintown also had some of those individual vendors delayed because of the snow but the majority of their items arrived with no problem.
“The warehouse shipments from the Grocery Outlet Warehouse, they did a really good job…our deliveries were actually right on time on the day that we normally get them,” Eric Senges the Owner Operator of Grocery Outlet Bargain Market said.
Milk, eggs and bread, the staples of winter storm shopping, typically go the fastest. Both stores anticipate the panic shoppers when weather is forecasted and change shipments for more supplies to prepare.
“We expected to get a rush…we didn’t run out of milk, we didn't run out of eggs, we ran a little light on bread towards the end,” Senges said.
“You're watching your sale items, you're putting limits on your product cause you would like for it to last a little bit longer for more customers,” Hacker said. “You have to get through those couple days and then things after that it kind of just simmers down and goes back to normal.”
“In general, yes, we were well prepared,” Senges said.
