A Monday water main break in Girard has been repaired. Girard Water Superintendent Mike Scoville said the repairs were finished by 6:30 p.m. During the repairs, 44 homes along Beechwood Avenue, between Park Avenue and Churchill Road, were without water for roughly an hour.

A boil advisory is now in effect for residents in the area. Scoville told 21 News that the advisory is precautionary and due to possible contamination during the depressurization of the water lines. He also advises residents to use cold water from their taps for boiling as hot water may pull any potential lead contaminants out of standard faucets.

"Boiling water only removes bacteria, not lead," according to EPA guidelines cited by the Girard Water Department.

The water department advised residents "to bring their cold water only to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming to kill potential bacteria that may be present, or to use bottled water at this time...Boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, food preparation, and brushing teeth."

Two negative samples are required before boil advisories are lifted and Scoville said a sample was taken Monday evening. It will be roughly two to three days before the advisory is lifted for residents.
