Pennsylvania - Students in Pennsylvania will be required to learn how to write in cursive after Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bill into law this week.

Act 2 of 2026, also known as House Bill 17, was passed through the House in November 2025 and was passed through the Senate on February 3, 2026.

The law will require every public and private elementary school across the state to include cursive handwriting in the students' curriculum.

According to a release, Pennsylvania joins more than a dozen states that already require cursive handwriting to be taught in schools. Ohio schools have been teaching cursive since it was signed into law back in 2018.

House Bill 17 will officially take effect in Pennsylvania schools in the next 60 days.
