NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - A Newton Falls woman won a $300,000 top prize after her husband bought her a lottery ticket for his birthday.

The man received several scratch-off tickets as birthday gifts and won $150. He used those winnings to buy more tickets at the Newton Falls Convenient Mart on South Milton Boulevard. Because the store was out of his wife's usual game, he purchased four $5 Special Edition Cashword tickets instead.

The woman scratched the tickets later that night while her husband was out with friends. The first ticket she played revealed 10 words. She used the Ohio Lottery mobile app to scan the ticket and confirm the jackpot.

When her husband returned home, he initially thought she had won $50. The couple told lottery officials they plan to use the money to pay off their home and vehicle before saving the rest.

After state and federal tax withholdings, the winner will receive $219,750. According to the Ohio Lottery, five top prizes remain in the Special Edition Cashword game as of Wednesday.
