Judge calls for summit to discuss youth-related violence in Trumbull County
WARREN - Trumbull County Family Court judge David Engler calls for a regional summit to address youth-related violence after a juvenile was shot and killed Wednesday.
Engler says the summit would involve stakeholders from across Trumbull County to discuss ways to combat youth-related violence and prevent further deaths.
"It's not acceptable, whether it's one or three or fifteen or however many," he said.
Engler and administrative judge Samuel Bluedorn say they will collect and consolidate data related to youth delinquency for the summit.
"When we do our assessments, we find out where a child has mental health issues, behavioral health issues, or criminogenic needs," Bluedorn said.
Engler says he believes local government and community services could play an active role in spotting and preventing delinquent behaviors in children.
"It's ok to look at yourselves, your organizations, your courts, your policing, your child protective services, your schools, and say 'is there something we can do better to positively affect the children that we're responsible for protecting?'" he said.
Warren 6th ward councilwoman Honeya Price spoke alongside Engler about gun violence among youth in Warren.
"I have relatives that have pulled the trigger, and I have relatives that have passed on," she said.
Price says her priority is to find out how some children in Warren acquire guns so easily.
"How did he get a gun? How did his friends get a gun? Why is everyone shooting each other in our community under the age of sixteen?" she said.
Price adds that she hopes the summit will provide effective solutions.
"We meet all the time on things in the community, but it's time for us to come together and have a strong program, and when I say strong, I mean a strong program that we can see is working," she said.
Warren resident Danielle Burns, who is also a parent, says she believes that Warren City Police should enforce a curfew to prevent youth delinquency.
"If I was riding my bike back in the day, Officer Nagy would've snatched me off of it," she said.
Engler hopes to have a summit within 60 to 90 days.
