$750 reward offered to identify owners of three emaciated dogs
TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - Three dogs are recovering after humane agents rescued them over the weekend in Warren and Brookfield.
The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project saved two male dogs and one female who were found severely underweight, with their ribs, spines, and hip bones clearly visible.
One of the dogs, Otis, was in the worst condition. He was hospitalized for sever malnourishment and dehydration. The president of the organization, Jason Cooke said the dog is now receiving treatment and being closely monitored.
Cooke is asking for the publics help in identifying who the dogs belong to. A $750 reward is being offered for information that leads to answers and arrests.
"In this case, these dogs are so easily recognizable. I mean, how many tan dogs are running down Stewart Sharon that just had a litter and are skin and bones and the same way with the brown one that was on West Market Street. I mean, somebody's got to know who these dogs belong to," Cooke said.
The shelter is currently at capacity, and while many people associate overcrowded shelters with cold winter months, Cooke said warmer months are actually worse.
"The statistics show that as the year progresses, and the months get warmer, our intakes skyrocket. And you can see here we had a bunch of cold weather, and then it started getting warm, and then we just got flooded with dogs," Cooke said.
Reward funds come from community donations and Cooke said they offer rewards in the most severe neglect or abuse cases, especially when tracking down the responsible party can prevent it from happening again.
"Not only do we want to find out who had these dogs and why they are in this condition, we want to make sure that there's no other dogs like this, because oftentimes that is the case," Cooke said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact The Healthy Hearts and Paws project.
