WARREN - The Warren City Health District is asking the public to be cautious of contact with wildlife as it awaits testing results, according to a release.

The city's Environmental Health Division has been monitoring and observing 40 or more geese along the Mahoning River and around several parks.

The district is currently waiting on test results to determine whether Avian Influenza or the bird flu is present in these animals.

It asks the public to follow these safety recommendations while the confirmation is pending:

  • Do not approach, touch, or handle any dead or visibly ill birds
  • Keep children and pets away from dead wildlife, including birds and rodents
  • Avoid areas where deceased animals are present
  • Do not allow pets to investigate or retrieve wildlife
  • Wash hands thoroughly if you have been outdoors in areas where wildlife activity is present

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of the bird flu in humans include eye redness, respiratory issues and fever. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can lead to death if not treated properly.

The release states that the district will continue to monitor the situation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and will give updates as they become available.
