Niles awarded $600k in federal funds, will 'help stabilize sewer rates'

The City of Niles was awarded $600,000 in federal funding to upgrade its sanitary system, hoping to mitigate flooding during heavy wet weather events and help stabilize sewer rates for Niles residents, according to a Facebook post from Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz.
"Securing this federal investment allows us to continue making smart, forward-thinking improvements to our infrastructure," Mientkiewicz stated.
The funding will support Phase 3 of the Niles Sanitary Detention Pump Station Project.
"This project not only mitigates flooding risks during major rainfall, but it also helps control long-term operational costs, which is essential for keeping sewer rates stable for our residents," Mientkiewicz stated.
Mientkiewicz also applauded Rep. Dave Joyce for their two-year effort in working toward "bringing federal dollars back to the City of Niles."
Phase 1 of the project took place in 2023 and Phase 2 in 2025.
