LISBON, Ohio - On Thursday, the Village of Lisbon held a meeting to discuss its plans to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.

During the meeting, members brainstormed different ways to celebrate with surrounding communities.

Lisbon Mayor Peter Wilson said that the village plans to have at least one event each month, including another firework show this year on July 2. He said their goal is to have events that everyone can enjoy, but also some events that cater to different interests.

"The fireworks show has a very broad appeal. [Last year] We had probably between 4,000 to 5,000 people, which was great. We raised nearly $30,000 in four months, so there was huge community outreach and support," Wilson said. "But some of our other events may have a much smaller audience."

Wilson said he has been discussing joint efforts with neighboring communities about future events.

"We have already started talking to other communities," Wilson explained. "Leetonia and Hanoverton have signaled their interest in joining us for the fireworks celebration."

Wilson said that smaller communities can have a hard time producing a fireworks show because of rising prices.

"Those prices have skyrocketed. Smaller communities don't have the financial wherewithal to have their own, so we're saying 'hey, join us then.'"

Lisbon is one of many communities in the Valley joining the nation in celebrating America's 250th birthday.
