Some roads reopened after derailed train blocked road crossings in Alliance
A train car malfunction was blocking roads in Alliance on Tuesday.
A Norfolk Southern train headed east derailed after a railcar's main beam broke, spilling sodium bicarbonate, a solid form of baking soda, according to Alliance Safety Service Director Michael Dreger, around 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Dreger says Alliance and Sebring Emergency Services are working together to help provide emergency services for the community, which is divided by railroad tracks, preventing vehicles from crossing the roads in the event of an emergency.
Alliance Fire Chief Jason Hunt told 21 News that a nearby underpass and overpass are allowing traffic to get around the roadblock.
The train derailed near E. Keystone Road and N. Park Avenue along Alliance's north side.
A westbound train was also stopped, blocking the crossings in Sebring and briefly blocking all traffic in that community.
Dreger says he has been told that reopening all Alliance road crossings could take up to 8 hours, or approximately 3 p.m.
As of roughly 4 p.m., most traffic to the area has been restored and the train has been moved from the area. However, Park Avenue and Keystone Road crossings remain closed.
No one was injured in the train accident.
ODOT has placed road-closed signs at State Route 225 and US Route 62 to reroute traffic to the west. Traffic headed North can still take State Route 183 and use Gaskill or Rockhill road crossings.
Alliance Police has been deployed to the affected area to address potential traffic issues.
Norfolk Southern said it responded to a one-car derailment, no hazmat involved, and is asking for the community's patience until the scene is cleared.
Norfolk Southern is working to get the damaged car removed from the track on Tuesday afternoon.
The cause of the derailment is still being investigated.
