The recognition comes after each of the departments met the standards required for accreditation and recognition, including first-time accreditation for six departments, a "Pathways Recognition" for one, and reaccreditation for 12 others. PHAB President and CEO Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said that the accreditation and recognition processes are "thorough and rigorous". PHAB is the only accrediting body for governmental public health departments in the U.S.

"These departments demonstrate leadership, accountability, and a commitment to delivering the highest quality public health services to their communities," Khaldun said. "They join a growing network of more than 450 departments working to strengthen public health infrastructure."
