McNally introduces bill to assist local veteran organizations

An Ohio representative from Youngstown was part of introducing a new piece of legislation on Thursday that is aimed at using state dollars to help veterans in need.
Representatives Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) and Meredith Lawson-Rowe (D-Reynoldsburg) introduced House Bill 721 that will establish the Veterans Organization Grant Program. The program would work with local veterans' organizations through the Department of Development to provide funds for Memorial Day expenses.
"Veterans' organizations are often the first place our veterans turn for support, connection, and community," McNally stated.
According to a 2024 study from the Housing Assistance Council, Ohio has over 600,000 veteran residents, with almost 600 experiencing homelessness.
The state's suicide rate for veterans is also higher than the national rate, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
"This legislation recognizes the vital role these local groups play and gives them the resources to meet veterans where they are—whether that means honoring their service, preventing homelessness, or helping them age with dignity. Investing state dollars in trusted, community-based solutions is one of the most effective ways we can truly show up for Ohio's veterans," McNally stated.
The study also showed that 7.4% of Ohio veterans live in poverty.
"Veterans and our military are the literal backbone of our society," Lawson-Rowe stated. "This bill shows our commitment to celebrating veterans across the state and acknowledging their selfless sacrifice to this nation."
House Bill 721 now awaits committee assignment from the Speaker of the House, and no formal action has been taken.
McNally represents the 58th District, which encompasses the City of Youngstown, Poland Village, Poland Township, Lowellville Village, Coitsville Township, Austintown Township, Jackson Township, Milton Township and Craig Beach Village at Lake Milton.
