WARREN - Earlier this week, samples from dead geese found in Warren City parks were sent by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) for testing of the bird flu.

An environmental specialist with ODNR confirmed with 21 News on Friday that the test results came back positive.

This means the birds that were sampled carried the bird flu, or Avian Influenza, which is a highly contagious disease that can spread between birds and other forms of wildlife. Humans can also get the bird flu if they come into contact with the carrier.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the bird flu is causing outbreaks all across the country.

It is recommended that people do not approach, touch or handle any dead or visibly ill birds, keep children and pets away from dead wildlife, avoid areas where deceased animals are present, do not allow pets near wildlife, and wash hands thoroughly after being near wildlife.

If you come across a dead bird, you are encouraged to contact your nearest Natural Resources Manager or ODNR's Division of Wildlife.
