Ohio EPA approves Canfield business to stop monitoring spill into Saw Creek

Nearly two years after an unauthorized wastewater discharge by Material Sciences Corporation (MSC) in Canfield, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is allowing the business to stop monitoring the spill for harmful chemicals that occurred along Saw Mill Creek.
According to the filing, the requested Notice of Termination was accepted by the Ohio EPA Monday, and no further monitoring reports are required.
The discharge into a storm drain was first reported on July 11, 2024, and the release was stopped and cleanup began in the area along the MetroParks bike trail.
The wastewater was being tested for heavy metals, including arsenic and cyanide.
In February, it was reported that water quality met safety standards ranging from fair to excellent following the cleanup efforts, compared with the previous study of the area, last conducted in 2013.
MSC has stated that it believed large volumes of water from power washing led to historic contamination in the groundwater or in abandoned storm pipes beneath the facility, which in turn led to the discharge.
